5 Tips For Storing Your Produce on a Plant-Based Diet

    Published: May 21, 2019 · Modified: May 8, 2023 by Chuck Underwood · 3 Comments

New to a plant-based diet? Have no idea how to store all these new foods you may be buying? Wondering why your potatoes keep sprouting so fast or turning green? Well, look no further because in this article I will give you my Top 5 Tips for Storing Your Produce on a Plant-Based Diet.

    In The Fridge

The majority of the fruits and veggies you buy can easily be stored in your fridge.

    Separate Your Fruits and Veggies

But - keep your veggies and fruits in separate drawers. Gases from ripening fruit (especially apples, pears, and bananas) can make other produce ripen and spoil even faster.

    On Your Kitchen Counter

5 tips for storing your produce

Fresh basil, tomatoes, avocados, grapes, and bananas will be fine left on your kitchen counter.

Stonefruit (peaches, apricots, and plums) will be fine on the counter too, but once they ripen put them in the fridge.

    In a Cupboard or Pantry

5 tips for storing your produce

Store your onions, garlic, winter squash, potatoes, mangoes, papayas, and pineapples in a cool dark place like a cupboard.

    But Separate Your Spuds

5 tips for storing your produce

The gas from onions will cause your potatoes to sprout faster so be sure and keep them separated.

And sunlight will cause your potatoes to turn green so be sure they are kept in a dark place like a paper grocery bag or pantry.

Curious, I’ve read before not to keep your potatoes in the fridge but if I don’t they sprout too fast. Any thoughts?

If that's your case - then keep doing what you've been doing. They'll be ok.
