    Healthy Lentil Manwiches

    Wow it seems like FOREVER since I've been on here!  I miss you guys!

    Yeah, the new job is going fine - in fact, there's talk of hiring me permanently soon, which would be a REAL good thing as then I can start getting BENEFITS again!

    Marketplace Health Insurance IS expensive - and that's all I want to say about that.  

    Anyway, I was creating in the kitchen last night and whipped up this version of one of my favorite sandwiches from my childhood......Manwiches!

    Yes, I actually loved that stuff - as gross as it may sound now that we're all healthy Plant Based Gurus...   But I tell you what - when you make it Plant Based?  And from scratch?  Without the Ketchup (as many copycat recipes do)?

    It makes a WORLD of difference!

    (I chose not to use ketchup to stay away from the High Fructose Corn Syrup) 

    It's a pretty easy recipe to make and yields a lot of sandwiches.  Ladies - your husbands will love this stuff - trust me 🙂

    Basically you make the sauce while your lentils are cooking and then mix them both together.  Just that easy.  Scoop onto your favorite Whole Wheat Buns and dinner is ready.

    In this recipe I used:

    • Lentils (which are ridiculously good for you and full of fiber)
    • Red and Green Bell Peppers (pretty much standard for Manwich)
    • and tiny chunks of Potatoes - (to help make it thick and hold it all together)

    Paired with the homemade sauce I'll describe below - these make some mighty tasty sandwiches!

    Let's just say I know what I'll be taking in my lunch this week!

    Description

    For all you guys who loved Manwiches as a kid - this recipe's for you. Forget the beef - Lentils are the new thing - and with this homemade sauce? Pshhhhhh....


    Ingredients

    Scale

    The Filling

    • ¾ cup Red Bell Pepper ((minced))
    • ¾ cup Green Bell Pepper ((minced))
    • 1 small Russet Potato ((diced))
    • 1 cup Dried Lentils
    • 2 cups Low Sodium Vegetable Broth

    The Sauce

    • 1 can Tomato Paste ((6oz))
    • ½ cup Water
    • ½ cup Maple syrup
    • ½ cup White Vinegar
    • 1 tsp Onion Powder
    • 1 tsp Chili Powder
    • ½ tsp Salt
    • ½ tsp Yellow Mustard
    • ½ tsp Vegan Worcestershire Sauce
    • ¼ tsp Garlic Powder
    • ⅛ tsp Allspice
    • ⅛ tsp Red Chile Pepper Flakes
    • ⅛ tsp White Pepper
    • 1 pinch Ground Cloves
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 Tbls Cornsartch and 1 Tbls Water for thickener

    Instructions

    1. Saute peppers and potato in a little veggie broth until softened
    2. Nope: You could add a little chopped onion too.
    3. Add rinsed lentils and veggie broth and heat to boiling
    4. Reduce heat and partially cover for 45 min
    5. Meanwhile prepare sauce
    6. Add paste, water, corn syrup, vinegar, seasonings, to a small sauce pan
    7. Whisk until mixed thoroughly and heat until bubbly.
    8. Whisk cornstarch and a tablespoon of water to make a slurry
    9. Stir cornstarch slurry into sauce to thicken.
    10. Once lentils have absorbed most of their water, stir in sauce .
    11. Continue heating to desired consistency.

      Wondering what variety of lentils you use. Consistency of red compared to green would vary greatly.

      This seems like a lot of wet product compared to the amount of lentils used. Seems like it may be too wet. I am wanting to try this. Reviews sound good.

      I have not ate Manwiches/Sloppy Joes ever since I changed my eating habuts and watch what I buy (yup, that vrgan lifestyle), but I recently tried this recipe and it came out fantastic. I ate this for lunch for a week straight at work, and this had me impatiently waiting for my lunch hour. Will definitely make this again someday, but right now, I have MORE recipes to try from Chuck.
      And the old comment about masculinity, your diet has nothing to do with your manhood.

        It ought to be illegal—considered some form of fraud—to call anything a “manwich”, or by any other name that implies masculinity, that doesn't include real meat.

        Not that a real man cannot east things like this from time to time, but a real man needs real meat in his diet.  A vegan/vegetarian diet is stable only for pathetic, metrosexual girly men, not for real men.

        "Metrosexual girly men" are far more sexy to me than your kind of manly. What I see on most men who eat "real meat" is a pot-belly that gets worse as they age, then they have to take several medications just to stay alive. Viagra gets added at some point because they develop ED from poor circulation. You call that masculinity?

        One sign of cardiovascular disease is erectile disfunction. And that is caused by a poor blood flow to the penis. Which is cause by narrowed arteries due to dietary fat, mostly saturated (animal products). So...how is that considered manly? Real men eat plants. Some of the strongest animals in the planet are herbivores. Don't know why some people still think that meat equals strength. Look up Frank Medrano or Tim Shieff . Maybe you wanna discuss with them about this subject.

        Good luck being manly with low testoterone, a limp dick and a beer belly. The facts are vegan men have more testosterone then men who eat meat. Vegan men on average are fitter being the only group that is not overweight or obese. Vegan men have fewer instances of Erectile Dysfunction (ED), also, “men over 40 who experience ED have a 50x (5,000%!!) risk of having a cardiac event.”

Poor Bob, before fearing for your penis you should open your brain: study, read, take a look beyond your tiny little world. You'll have a GREAT life, in and out the bed, if you'll go plant based. Trust me.

      Another winner from Chuck. Thank you. I made this yesterday. Perhaps I ought to have cooked it a little longer because it was a bit too runny to stay in a bun. However it was perfectly good to eat with a knife and fork on the Country Potato Rolls I'd baked the previous day and I think it will be equally good on pasta which I plan to try this evening.

      I made this for supper last night! My husband loved it! My kids gobbled it up! I did use sugar instead of the corn syrup just because I didn't have any on hand and I didn't have a bay leaf but it still turned out fantastic! Thank you Thank you Thank you for all your amazing posts! I love em!

            No, there is not.  Worcestershire sauce is made from a fish extract.  If it's not made from a fish extract, then it's not Worcestershire sauce.

          I have "The Wizards" vegan organic Worcesteshire sauce in my fridge right now. It just doesn't have anchovies in it. Its not that hard to find. Check amazon or whole foods.

          Dude, I am worried for you. Chuck wrote "VEGAN Worchestershire" in the recipe. Can you read? Plus, why don't you allow yourself the benefit of the doubt every now and then, and try using google?

      You avoided the ketchup because of the high fructose corn syrup and then used light Karo corn syrup??!! I found a very good high fructose corn syrup-free ketchup by Hunt's that I'd be happy to use if I knew how to make the adaptation. Care to share?

      Think maple syrup would work in place of the corn syrup? Would you use a like amount (1/2 cup) or a little less, since it's not as thick as corn syrup? And thanks for the new recipe!

      In re marketplace insurance, just curious, I wonder if your insurer would give a discount for your (and your wife's?) being plant-based. Can you provide medical reports on any improvement in markers for chronic disease. Have you already checked on this?

      In re sweeteners, I'd probably use a little cane syrup (local product). I was thinking one might also use applesauce or pear sauce (blended pears) or minced raisins or date syrup. What's the ratio of the 1/2 C of corn syrup to total quantity of sauce? Need it be that much? (sweetener as an addictive addition to sell the meat?)
